Split Rail Fencing on the Colorado Front Range: When It's the Right Call
Jun 28, 20264 min read

Split rail fencing looks simple, but a well-built cedar split rail in Colorado is one of the longest-lasting, lowest-maintenance fences we install. It's also the cheapest per linear foot — which is why acreage owners in Falcon, Peyton, Black Forest and Monument keep asking for it.
When split rail is the right pick
- Property lines on 1+ acre lots.
- Horse property (2-rail or 3-rail with wire mesh).
- Windy exposed lots — almost no sail area.
- HOAs that require a 'ranch' aesthetic.
When it's the wrong pick
- You need privacy — split rail is see-through by design.
- You have small dogs — they walk right under 2-rail. We add welded wire.
- You're inside a suburban HOA that requires privacy fencing.
How we build it for Colorado weather
Cedar posts set 30" in concrete, rails locked with hidden brackets rather than notches (notches rot faster on the Front Range). Adds 5–8 years to the fence's life vs. traditional joinery.
